CARNIVAL AND THE WHEEL OF LIFE:
Before, when official history was told by ‘winners’, carnival was associated only with the start of Catholic Lent and therefore it was time ‘to be bad’ so later they would ‘be good’…
At that time, no one spoke yet of those barbarians that dared to have fun during the Saturnalia and Bachic feasts, of those only spoke the ones who read and decided which parragraphs should stay out of history.
But well, they did not consider that around the corner many more would be reading soon, and not only what they were saying, also the kidnapped history that was not written, in which besides Roman celebrations, Pre-Christian and Pagan ones were present and referred to live history that unfolded synchronizing to natural cycles in the Wheel of Life.
For people in the North, carnival had other names and celebrations welcomed the productive period of the year, which started with the rebirth of spring, joining to fecundation for Mother Earth, offering to Her and dancing to awake her generating womb with the first rains. In our Southern territories, we do this in August, dancing for the Mamita de Copacabana, Urkupiña, Asunción, de las Nieves, and others according to the local village.
Carnival for Southern people were celebrations that welcomed the quiet period of the year which started with the rebirth of Autumn, joining to regeneration of Mother Earth, letting Water reach all corners to clean what was no more and revealing the new faces of what was built.
In our territories, now we do it receiving Candelaria/Mamita de Copacabana/Q’ota Mama, the Potato Feast, and, carnival date that goes back and forward during February decided by religious calendar following Lent; but even that Catholic celebration follows the natural cycles of the Moon and the Sun, that is, it turns with the Wheel of Life.
